The primary task of the institution is to safeguard the high nature-related values which are present within the territory of the Park and to promote sustainable development of the human activities carried out in it, provided that these shall not negatively affect the natural environment.

The forest, environmental and agri-food Unit Command is the section of the specialized Carabinieri, specialised in protection of the natural and landscape heritage, in preventing and combating environmental and agrifood crimes.  The “Corpo forestale” is responsible for monitoring of State owned Parks, Natural Protected Areas and Nature Reserves, where it carries out research and preservation projects as well as environmental education activities.

The “Dipartimento di Scienze Biologiche, Geologiche e Ambientali dell’Università di Bologna “ (Biological, Geological and Environmental Sciences Department of the University of Bologna) carries out many researches with regard to organic sector, both genetically and ecosystem based. The working group carries out analysis of ecological diversity with regard to vegetation and landscape, by deducting solutions for the management of environmental systems with different natural features. Researches are also developed with regard to ecology and population dynamics, vegetable and landscape communities by the use of multi-source data which are collected in geo-referenced databases and evaluated by statistic methods.

Among the different scientific fields of activity of the “Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra e dell’Ambiente “ Department of Earth and Environment Sciences (DSTA), it is worth noting those inherent the section of “ Ecologia del Territorio” Environmental Ecology, such as: determination of vegetable species, taxonomic and floristic research, study of flora and of natural or man-made vegetation in protected areas or to be submitted to an environmental protected regime, interaction between vegetables and climate, management of the vegetable heritage with particular reference to rare and / or threatened species and communities and to the old agricultural and horticultural activities, establishment of conservation techniques both in-situ and ex- situ , seed banking, reintroductions, monitoring of plants which are rare or under threat of disappearance.
